Other Works, Older Works:  Plein Air

As my focus has shifted to the portraits of wildlife, I don't want to lose sight of where I've been.

Here I've brought together my daylight plein air pieces from the last few years.  And since plein air is a powerful practice applicable to the main body of my work as well, new plein air pieces will be added here in the future.

Overlooking the Coachella Valley is a cluster of homes build high on the mountain, nestled in folds of the mountain covered in granite boulders and Piņon pines. This painting brings together the three main elements of a recent afternoon there - the sculptured granite boulders, charismatic pines, and the distant mountains.

"Pinyon Crest"
Acrylic on Canvas Board
9"x12"  plein air

At The Living Desert, in Palm Desert, California, there is a garden that seduces lucky gardeners into the xeroscaping lifestyle - lush, water efficient or drought tolerant gardens that welcome native wildlife and provide color and inspiration throughout the year. The gateway in this painting invites you to explore a vibrant garden without grass, primroses or petunias.

"Garden Gate"
Acrylic on Canvas Board

Recently I spent a very pleasant afternoon painting plein air at a very quiet and cordially secluded Palm Springs country club. This entranceway, painted with the homeowner's permission, reminded me of the relaxed yet warm welcome I found there.

Painted plein air during a recent visit to the Smoke Tree Ranch in Palm Springs. Not only did the Ranch have stunning views of the surrounding foothills, the collection of decades old native plants and trees was a real treat. Smoke Trees, when not nurtured in gardens, are found in the washes of the Sonoran desert, and standard element in mainstream impression of NA deserts - medium height wispy trees that look convincingly like smoke from a smoldering fire in the distance - until a brief period in late spring or early summer when they are covered in tiny indigo flowers, becoming a vibrant cloud of not smoke, but dazzling purple.

People from up north have asked - isn't it boring, living in the desert?  I invite them to come visit. My yearly visits to the washes and trails of Anzo Borrego are always inspiring. This particular painting captures the moment when we realized, far out along Split Mountain Trail, that it was getting time to head home.

"Anza Borrego Dusk"
Acrylic on Canvas Board
12"x16"

A watercolor painting of the moment when the sun dips behind a bank of clouds or fog, but before it goes behind the mountain proper, the way the cloud is lit from behind, the first hints of the color transformation about to take over the sky.

"San Jacinto Dusk"
Watercolor on Arches paper
